January 2020 Beauty Balance

I have put myself on a 3 month no-buy or replacements only no-buy though I genuinely do not believe that I’ll have to buy any replacements in this 3 month period. So, there’s nothing coming into my collection at the moment.

So, this will be my only beauty balance post for this month. First of all, you may remember that I gave up my beauty balance posts in December because we had an awful month personally, I couldn’t keep track of anything in general, my sadness was too large, and I overdid it in the “retail therapy” department in that month. I’ve reigned it all back in now, and am back to finishing up products. And decluttering. Shall we discuss the declutters first?

img_3127

These are the 6 items I am decluttering. The leave in conditioner is brand new, never used. I am giving it to Miss Butterfly as it’s the last thing my super short hair needs. The reason I didn’t give it to her earlier is that if I give her 3 items of the same thing, she tends to get really careless with them, or she starts giving them to her friends. It’s better if I hang onto them and when she’s out of an item, I “declutter” another to her. We’ve reached that point. This is a good leave in conditioner, I did use it when my hair was long and I liked it quite a lot.

Then there’s the thrive causemetics eye brightener. I had this in a project pan, used it regularly, tried it all sorts of ways, and it’s just not for me. I can’t even use it as an eyeshadow primer. It’s just NOT for me. Perhaps Miss Butterfly would like it, or one of her friends.

Then there are 4 nyx liquid lipsticks from the advent calendar. Not sure if entirely this year or one from last year as well. What I’ve done this year to rotate through my lip items is pull them all into a large box, and then I have Miss Butterfly choose one for me to wear next. Once I wear it, I put it back in my drawer so it doesn’t get chosen a second time. The problem is, when she’d pull one of these particular liquid lipsticks, I’d instead choose not to use the lipstick at all, and repeatedly just use a lipstick I keep at work for when I forget to put one in my pocket on the way into work. This, for me, was a sign that I really don’t like the formula and it doesn’t matter to me what color it is, I just don’t want it. I grabbed those I could see in the container and dropped them in here, keeping only one dark metallic one that I really loved, and one super dark vampy brown that I loved. It’s likely more of these little ones in other formulas will be in an upcoming beauty balance, but these are the ones I just know I don’t want to wear.

And here are my actual empties, products I have worked my way entirely through.

I did not care for the moroccan oil volumizing mousse, I want something a little stickier and a little more thickening. This didn’t do it for me. They’ve got another I may try someday, but I’ve got a spray mousse going right now and can’t purchase new until that one is almost gone.

I finished my oribe dry shampoo as well. I had worked my way about halfway through this while my hair was long. I cut it early last summer, and I wasn’t using dry shampoo at all. But, then I decided to try this as a texturizing product, and it worked ok. So, on the weekends when I cared a little less about how my hair looked, I used this as my texture spray. I finally finished it this month.

I have been working my way through the Ahava hydration mask for ages. I got it in a subscription box, never loved it, but decided it was good enough as an overnight mask to work my way through. I am thrilled to be done.

I’ve got an it cosmetics illuminating cc cream which I had in a project pan at the end of last year. I am glad to have used every last bit of this product, I liked the product quite a lot, and I would repurchase in the future though it’ll be some time before I am really on the market for a new foundation.

And finally, in a subscription box, I received some makeup wipes. I have removed makeup wipes from things that I purchase, but I enjoyed working through these.

All in all, between the decluttering and the using, I have moved 11 products out of my collection this month. This year I have far fewer sample sizes so it’s harder to get through products in a month. I am feeling pretty good about my 11 items. I mean, except for the wipes, every product I used up this month was a full-sized item.

A Nice Chunk

It’s been a very busy 2 weeks at work, we have taken on new work we’ve not previously done before, and I have been hard at work learning those tasks so I can teach them to my team, as well as creating new procedures to track the new work. I am actually quite amazed at what I was capable of accomplishing in only two weeks, but my brain has paid the price.

This is to say, I am exhausted. I’ve also had family in town (That’s a good thing!) so we’ve had some various dinners together and so on as well, taking up evenings where we’d typically be chilling and unwinding at home.

So, today, I planned a quiet day. I knew Mr. Ink would be working in the morning, so I didn’t sign up for my regular volunteer shift at the dog rescue. I decided what I was going to need most was a day of introversion. A day of quietly getting tasks done at home and unwinding. I plan to walk the dogs, maybe take them to the dog park as well, but in general, keep things quiet and chill.

This morning I managed to finish a chunk of a newer knitting project, enough of it to finally show it off.

img_3128

The pattern is scottish stripes by Ursa Major knits. I have knit this before. It got old toward the end of the scarf, and I didn’t want to knit it again immediately. But, Miss Marja really liked it and had hoped for one for herself out of her own handspun. It’s been a while, maybe even 2 years, so I decided I wanted to knit another, and we recently searched her stash for an appropriate yarn. I think this yarn, a chain ply, is working out beautifully! It has a lot of interest and I am staying highly motivated on knitting it so far. It’s mindless enough to knit while watching TV with Mr. Ink in the evenings but I do need to pay attention to the pattern from time to time as well, so not so utterly mindless as to be mind-numbing. It’s working out so well at the moment.

I have another project going at work, and these are the only two knitting projects in my life right now. I am enjoying them both immensely and am satisfied with just those two. Hopefully the sharp focus on both of them will make it seem that they are getting finished up in a rapid amount of time.

That’s all from here on my quiet and relaxing day. I hope you are having one of the same!

Yeah I know

I know, I know, I rarely get to post! I blame the weather. And work. I leave when it is dark, I return home when it is dark. Even during the day, it’s snowing and gloomy. Sometimes also extremely cold.

I did finish the entrelac cowl and I am wearing it at work today. Guess what? It’s snowing and gloomy. My photo is not the best.

img_3124

I do love a good entrelac project! They are just so satisfying, knitting up small squares and triangles! And when done with a yarn that changes colors, watching the squares hit different colors and seeing how it all knits up is charming! I think I need more entrelac in my life.

Quick Knitting Update

Just a quick knitting update as I work my way through the work week.

img_3102

Here’s a terrible photo of the cowl I made out of Miss Marja’s handspun using mitered squares. The handspun is fantastic! Chunky and full of interesting bits and colors. The cowl is very long and appropriately wide. The photo is terrible because I am never home during daylight hours during the week.

And that is all from me today. 🙂

Fury and Next Projects

Our little Fury dog continues to settle in beautifully into our home. She came to us completely untrained (though she is potty trained, thank goodness) and I’d had a ton of trouble attempting to lure her into a sit. Seemed like when I would try to do so, she’d do a submission roll onto her back instead. I tried and tried and then gave up. I took her to our rescue meet and greet to meet Rose’s foster family. And, no secret, to also ask for help getting her to do a sit. Rose’s foster mom managed to lure her into a sit first try. So I made her do it a number of times so I could observe her specific technique. I am proud to say that after working with Fury on Sunday, I can now get her to do a sit! This is great progress.

She and Rose are getting along very well. Rose is sometimes perplexed by Fury’s growls, as Lizzie’s growls meant something, so she’s used to paying attention. Fury growls in play, so Rose hasn’t quite figured out how to deal with that yet, but progress is being made. Rose is testing the boundaries of what she can get away with when Fury growls, so soon she’ll realize that the growls are playful.

Fury has decided she’s a lap dog now, so she’s often found on my lap when I am sitting on the couch. Since Rose generally sleeps at my feet or near my feet, that works out perfectly. Fury even allows me to knit when she’s sleeping on my lap now, so that has worked out beautifully for everyone! We look forward to seeing her personality emerge and shape, and I am glad she’s in our home.

As for knitting projects, I finished one up which is currently blocking. I never even posted an in progress photo of it, so quickly did I knit it. It’s for Miss Marja, it’s a cowl using mitered squares, and it’s out of her handspun. You can see a bit of it here:

img_3070

Though that was really more of a photo of Rose squishing me on the couch.

Because I finished the cowl, I figured I’d start a new project. I pulled out some yarn that Miss Marja gave me recently and wound it into a ball. I had a bit of a struggle trying to figure out what scarf to knit with it, but eventually settled on an entrelac project since it has been a long time since I’ve worked on one.

img_3091

This is a nice puffy 3 ply yarn and I wanted to showcase the colors with the entrelac design. I think this project is going to capture and keep my interest, and I might even feel an entrelac phase coming on!

Partners in Cream

So I am just over here deciding to join in on yet another project pan. Instead of one very large project pan this year I guess I’ve chosen a few small ones. I think that’ll work for me though.

This Partners in Cream project pan is currently going around youtube and I figured I could use the idea for myself as well. The idea is to be using your creams and liquids since they go off faster than powder products. I believe it’s to be a year long rolling project pan, so I will see how far I get.

I chose only 4 products to begin with. I think that’s sufficient, and will keep things low key since I’ve got a few other projects going on as well.

img_3078

From left to right. The first product is wet n wild’s primer spray. I’ve been using this to spray my brushes to make my eyeshadow more intense, and that’s how I have used it for a very long time. However, I have other sprays now and I don’t see some big need to keep this product for this purpose, I would love to have the space back that this takes up in my collection. So, I am going to concentrate on using this until it is gone.

Next up is a liquid eyeshadow from ciate. I don’t think I like it overly much. So, my goal on this one will be to use it enough to determine if it gets to stay in my collection or move on. Basically, I want to know if I would prefer to declutter it.

Then I’ve got the bare minerals primer. This is another product where there’s very little left. But, since I rarely use it, it has gone so slow. I want to get this used up and out of my collection, again, I can use that space back.

And finally there’s the sleek palette I panned off and on all last year. I want to finish the lighter contour shade, that’s my goal this spring. I feel like that’s something that should be possible, so let’s see how I go.

I believe that the updates for these are to be posted on the 10th of the month so I’ll update again in February and I will genuinely hope that I’ve got 2 out of the 4 items used up!

Introductions

It’s dog talk time again. Thank you all for your kind words about our Lizzie’s passing, we really appreciate it. And even the card! So kind.

As the month progressed, it became ever so clear that Rose was not going to be able to be an only dog. We attempted to do all our rescue recommended when one dog is experiencing loss. We kept to routines, gave time, kept energies as positive as possible, etc. After a couple weeks, Rose went back to normal when people were in the home. That was encouraging. She didn’t completely lose all the lessons that our confident Lizzie taught her.

But, when no one was home, things got bad. She escaped her kennel, she stress drooled puddles all over the floor, she shredded anything near her kennel including an entire chair, and then I had to take her to the vet because she hurt her paw trying to escape. It wasn’t good. Even if placed in her kennel for the shortest time, all these behaviors would begin.

While I was extremely resistant to adding another dog to our home, our rescue had brought in a little Lizzie sized Australian Kelpie who was Rose’s age. After a few days of her being in rescue, I tossed the idea out to Mr. Ink about this little dog. He, surprisingly, said yes right away. He, too, had realized that Rose wasn’t going to be an only dog. But, I wanted to make sure this little dog really would be good for our family.

Thankfully her foster mom is someone I am friends with, so I was able to contact her foster mom and ask her questions about her confidence levels, etc. Her foster mom immediately said “Actually, there’s a lot of her that reminds me of Lizzie, I think she’d be a good fit for your home.”

I was still ridiculously reluctant, but also knew it was probably the right thing to do for Rose. Her foster mom said “Hey, why don’t you come out to my place and spend some time with her?” So that’s what I did. After a few hours in foster mom’s home where this little dog showed off far beyond what foster mom expected her to, I came home realizing she’d be a great fit for our home.

2 days later I spent some time holding leashes at a meet and greet, then we took this little dog to meet up with Rose at the dog park.

img_4181

Oh, yeah, and Mr. Ink and Miss Butterfly met her too! We had worried that she might not be playful, but it turns out she loved running around. I think perhaps she hasn’t learned to play yet, and now she will learn.

So, after that, she came back to the house with us! And that’s how we ended up with a new dog despite me not wanting one right now. There’s a funny thing that happens with animals. She wiggled her way into my heart so fast, and she’s a doll and a delight and a constant amusement.

She adores people and is trying to figure out living in a home. She likes to steal things off counters and tables. She likes to look out windows. She’s figuring out the idea of “play” and it’s adorable.

And I’ve named her Furiosa. I love her mask markings and wanted to pay homage to that. Furiosa, my favorite character in my favorite movie, spreads grease over the top of her face. I thought this appropriate. We call her Fury for short.

So basically, I adopted an emotional support animal for my dog. Fury is figuring out life with Rose. Rose is figuring out where Fury fits in her home. We aren’t seeing a ton of play between the two of them yet but I have a suspicion it will come. But the best part? Rose is FINE in her kennel again, like magic. Some dogs weren’t meant to be alone. Rose is one of those dogs. We truly hope she never HAS to be alone again.

Fury has only been with us since Saturday but she’s made fantastic progress already! I am sure it will continue. There’s going to be a lot of training to be done soon, as Fury knows absolutely NOTHING, can’t even manage to get her to sit. I can’t even LURE her into a sit yet. But, first I want to see her relax in the home and see how she does, then we’ll work on the training portion of this equation.

Small herding breeds are absolutely my type of dog. I like the busy, I like their brains, and I like how alert they are. I think her personality is a very good balance for Rose and I am truly excited to see how this all goes for them both. The massive amounts of trepidation I felt about getting a new dog so quickly have all melted away leaving only a cute little 32 pound bundle of energy and muscle who desperately wants attention from her humans and is learning the ways of comfortable home life.

Another Paint Box Cowl

I began another paint box cowl with Marja’s yarn for Marja. I have been working pretty hard on it because, quite frankly, I find the pattern extremely addicting to work on.

I had been taking some time off last week so a fair amount got done on it last week. I returned back to work this week and forgot to bring knitting to work for my lunch breaks! I didn’t quite know what to do with myself. So, today I brought the cowl to work and that’s where it’ll live until it is done. I’ll get something else started at home.

img_3049

Here is what it is looking like so far. I had hoped that there would be enough contrast between the color-changing yarn and the plain blue, but it’s not nearly as contrasty as I’d hoped. Nonetheless, the pattern does show and it is pretty! It is equally addicting this time around and I almost feel as if I could start a third right after this one!

Paintbox Cowl

And this was the most surprising finish of 2019. Who knew I was going to  knock one final project out between christmas eve and new year’s day?

img_2953

Not me, that’s for sure! This was something I chose to knit on a whim and then got completely and utterly sucked into the pattern. The colorful yarn is one of Miss Marja’s handspun, the black is a rowan yarn I had in my stash. The project was so delightful that I went over to Miss Marja’s house the other day and said “Let’s choose some of your yarn so I can knit this again!” To which she was happy to oblige and we chose something from her stash I could knit up for her collection.

I also came home that day with 3 other skeins of yarn all for projects I can knit for her collection and I am really excited about doing each one of them! And then, I came home with two big bags full of handspun for my own collection, so that whole get the stash under 100 yarns is now a complete and utter pipe dream, but I do have a ton of gorgeous and fun yarn to mess around with! I can’t wait to show you all I do with it!

And with this one last project, I am able to say for certain that 2019 has been an epic knitting year, I finished a total of 43 projects. I really should get out more!

Mittens

And now we get back to the regularly scheduled knitting content. It may be the new year but I have two projects that I finished in 2019 and never got an opportunity to post about.

First up are a pair of mittens I made on a whim. Miss Marja had given me a skein of fabulously rustic yarn for my birthday. She spun it, of course. I had decided I’d make gloves, but then didn’t feel like working all the fingers so I ended up with mittens instead. I wear these often especially at the dog park!

img_2952

This ended up being my 42nd project of 2019 and that was quite amazing to me!

Rolling Project Pan

I have decided to forge my own way, sort of, with a project pan this year.

I’ve seen multiple people do the project pan roulette colabs where they draw prompts and choose an item to pan based on those prompts. I have decided to repurpose those prompts and work my way through as many of the 50 prompts as I can in one year.

I plan to keep it to 6 items at a time, when I finish a goal on one, I’ll just grab the next prompt on the list and figure out what item to roll in.

Prompts:
1.  A product with cute packaging
2.  An expensive product
3.  A product in loose form
4.  A drugstore product
5.  A product I bought because of youtube
6.  An old favorite

Here is the photo of the 6 items I have chosen.

img_2950

For my product with cute packaging, I have chosen my Pretty Vulgar setting powder. I’ll have to weigh this to track progress since it is not transparent. It is, however, cute. The weigh in on this one is 80 grams.

For my expensive product, I have chosen the hourglass ambient lighting powder in dim light. I generally use this to buff in my cheek products, it makes them look more smooth, natural, and blended. I  would like to hit pan in this product before rolling it out and choosing a new prompt.

For my product in loose form I have decided on my bare minerals powder foundation. This is almost a gimme situation as I am really close to being done with this powder. However, I tend to wear it only on the weekends, so it does take me some time to work through it. I’ve had it more than a year and I think it oxidizes on me a bit these days. This was in a former project, but I ended up stopping since I really like to have a powder foundation in my collection. Then I remembered that I also have a bare minerals pro foundation that I like using and that would serve this purpose in my life.

For a drugstore product, I am going to try to finish my NYX eyebrow powder pencil. I like this more than I liked last year’s eyebrow product which took me almost all year to finish. I like the product better as well. Plus, I don’t have a ton of brow products so it’s not really hard to concentrate on one item. To view the progress on this I am just going to go by the markings on the pencil itself. I figure I can compare to where I am from month to month looking at how close to the wording on the pencil I am.

For a product I bought because of youtube, I have chosen one of my CYO lifeproof foundations. I have two because I knew it was going to be discontinued. I thought “What if I really like it!” I do like it, but probably not enough to have two in my collection.

And finally, an old favorite. Do I have makeup that is an old favorite? Not really, I’ve only been messing around with makeup for about two years. But, I’ve had this hula bronzer sample in my collection almost the entire time and haven’t used it. I would like to use this up, though that won’t be so easy seeing as this tends to be pigmented and take a long time to use. I have a full size one as well! So this one out of my collection would be a relief.

Just like yesterday’s skincare project, it’s a relief to only be worried about photos for a few items. I am looking forward to changing up my projects this year and getting use out of these items!

Take Care of Your Meatsuit Project Pan

In a wonderful and strange situation where two of my hobbies overlap, seems that there’s a fair number of project panners in my knitting website. So they started a project pan thread and I am joining. The first posted project is the Take Care of Your Meatsuit project pan. So, a skincare project pan.

5 items, it’s a rolling project, all skincare related, so body care counts, monthly updates. Here’s what I’ve chosen to start with.

img_2960

I chose the shower gel because I haven’t been using it at all. Mostly because it’s an expensive item and I feel as if I put it in the shower, Miss Butterfly will use it up on me. So I don’t use it at all. I want to see if I can remember to bring it into the shower with me in the mornings and get some use out of it. I have used it once.

Next is a face cleanser. During my year of multiple subscription boxes, the things which I accumulated extremely fast were facial cleansers and face masks. This is one of them, as are the next two items as well. I like this well enough and I will use it once a day until it is gone then roll another in.

Next up, two face masks. Each of them serve different purposes so I am hoping to use each of them at least weekly. I marked one but the other is so full I can’t even mark it.

Then there’s a body scrub. I’ve worked pretty hard on this one, there’s about 1/8 left. But, I tend to not use it because I just don’t love it.

So that’s it for this particular project pan. Pretty easy, and photographing only 5 products for a project is really a relief after last year.

December Empties

Yes, you read that right, there’s not going to be a beauty balance this month. I did not keep track of incoming items due to dropping everything for my dog and the aftermath of losing her. Items did come in. Including the advent calendar, though I doubt I even kept half of that. All I did was keep the empties, and I’ll have to regroup with the beauty balance in the new year. In fact, I plan to change it up a bit, I’d like to do at least 3 months, if not more, of a replacements only low buy. More on that when I get organized in the new year.

I did manage to finish 10 items this month and am awfully close on a few more. I know that more than 10 items entered my collection though.

img_2948

I finished another farmacy green clean cleansing balm. I like this a ton but would only purchase it on sale. It is too expensive full price. I finished up two The Ordinary products, the niacinamide I used until it was almost gone and then gave the remainder to Miss Butterfly who was struggling with a really large acne situation on her forehead this past month. She’s got it a bit more under control now much to her relief. I also finished a retinoid. I am now working on a different The Ordinary product that is a retinol in oil and am liking that one better, especially for this time of year. So, I won’t repurchase this one yet.

I finished a sample of the dermalogica microexfoliant. I did not love this product and am glad to have used it up. I finished a heat protectant spray from Morrocan Oil, it was fine but I don’t know that it did much for my hair. I finished a Peter Thomas Roth potent c moisturizer which smelled like bacon or pig, and it didn’t really do anything special for my skin except make my upper lip sweaty immediately after putting it on. Not something I’ll seek out.

Now, I tried the Sunday Riley UFO serum, this had a very “green” or botanical smell, quite unpleasant. Another I won’t be purchasing a full size of! I finished a Dr. Jart moisturizer that I did actually like, but won’t purchase because I really adore my Belif moisturizers best.

Then there’s the Rosie Jane perfume I thought was very synthetic and the Tarte blush I finished in my project pan.

I felt like this was a really decent empties month despite just not caring or paying much attention to it at all through the course of the month.

I’ll be starting at square one this year, tracking my empties and what enters in a beauty balance, but I am hoping the items that leave far outweigh the items that enter, especially since I want to go at least 3 months without purchasing anything that isn’t a replacement. And honestly? I will be surprised if I have to replace anything in these upcoming months.
