Updates

It’s been some time since I’ve done any sort of update that wasn’t makeup or project pan related. And the reality is that this has everything to do with not crafting much at all. There are full weeks that go by without any knitting or spinning done at all. Many days are just busy, but I am also playing a lot of a video game instead as well. It’s kind of funny because back when I started knitting obsessively, I had decided to stop playing video games because at the end of the day I didn’t have anything to show for it. At least, in my mind, my creativity with knitting had a tangible object at the end of it. And so it’s been for 14 solid years. If it wasn’t knitting, it was spinning, processing fleece, dyeing yarn and fiber, sometimes even weaving, but always with the tangible item at the end.

The reality is that I am often overloaded with tangible items. They go to charity fundraisers and family and friends and still I have more tangible items than I need.

I have found that the current state of the world means that I just don’t have the energy to even think of what I might knit next. My brain is fried and even trying to find a pattern or read it or even download it is too much. So, I am back to video games and quite frankly, I could not care less about having a tangible item at the end.

In any case, today I do have a tangible item. Back at easter time I dyed some grey locks from a fleece I had processed with leftover easter egg dye. I didn’t do a fantastic job really, many of the locks were really muted in the end and I really would have done well to heat them higher with a longer period of soaking. But, at the same time, I had a cousin over and we were getting ready to go to the dog park and I really didn’t care.

I began flick carding those locks pretty soon after I dyed them but the project has sat in my living room unfinished ever since.

This morning we got a break in the heat. I am extremely sick of looking at that project unfinished in my living room. So, I sat outside and worked on it:

Oh yes, while outside I was also blocking a project I finally finished, more to come on that once it’s dry!

Out with me is our current foster dog. Poor gal is about a week into her forced kennel rest after heartworm treatment and she’s pretty miserable. There’s a ton o f whining and crying and not much at all of fun for her. She finds that even in the kennel she wants to be where the people and dogs are. We’d let her rest on the couch without the kennel as we did with our previous foster, but she doesn’t know the word rest outside the kennel. She’s young and extremely active and we can’t risk complications by letting her roam free and play. So we are all a little miserable during this time. Her bored and us sick of the whining and crying. In fact, the whole family is ready for a bit of a foster break after this darling finds her new home next month. Anyhow, point being, we just brought her entire kennel out to the patio so she could have a change of scenery while I worked on my project.

We did this last night while cooking too, just brought the entire kennel to the dining room so she could watch us cook. This little darling is a fantastic dog, active and fun and playful. Which means that it’s all the harder for her to be calm and makes me feel all the more guilty for forcing it even though it’s what is best for her.

In any case, I did finish the project! So I grabbed a shot of all my rolags from the project together.

Do I have any clue what these will be and how I will spin them and when? Nope, I do not. But, they can go back in the craft room and no longer live half done in my living room after 5 months of hanging out there and me working around them or trying to ignore them.

That’s it for today. It’s end of the month so it’ll be a fresh lot of makeup and project pan related posts shortly but somewhere in there I’ll also be able to post one precious finished object which feels like it’ll be the last for a long time. But who knows, perhaps my whims will switch again.

August Beauty Balance

In yesterday’s post I talked about what came into my life in the month of August. Which was technically July. But I’ve got exactly no need or desire to purchase anything in August, so we are calling it August beauty balance.

That post left me with 34 items leaving my collection over what arrived this year so far.

But, I need to get my empties squared away. Here’s what I’ve gone through this month:

The photo is very dark, sorry about that. If I hadn’t gotten a photo at 6 am I probably wouldn’t have gotten a photo at all. These empties bring my total leaving my collection over what entered for the year up to 42. (It was 43 last month, so I’ve actually moved backwards by one item, but I’ll make up for that next month I believe.)

A rundown of the products:

I’ve got a body wash from Dr. Teals, this thing is massive and took us ages to get through. Especially since I’ve also been project panning a different body wash. I actually quite liked this and I would repurchase. It’s clean and fresh and not at all cloying of a scent.

I also finished after at least a year of use (I rotate shampoos and also have extremely short hair) a Redken shampoo I purchased over a year ago. It’s a very nice shampoo and I am glad to have used it. However, I’ve got 3 more I am rotating through so I won’t repurchase.

The Ouai leave in conditioner I finished during a project pan. I got so accustomed to using it that I now forget every morning to rinse the conditioner out of my hair while I am in the shower. I liked it, it smelled nice and worked fine. I just don’t have a huge reason to use a conditioner on super short hair so I wouldn’t purchase. I got this in a subscription box, so I never did choose it in the first place.

I’ve got two products from The Ordinary. The first was their Matrixyl and hyaluronic acid serum which worked fine and I’d repurchase but I’ve got something else I am working through first. I also finished their Retinol 1% in squalane which was just perfectly fine and I’d repurchase.

I also finished two cleansers. Both travel sizes. One is Philosophy’s purity made simple cleanser. This has a really lovely scent and seemed pretty gentle. I did like it. And the other is La Roche Posay Toleriane hydrating gentle cleanser. This one feels exactly like my cerave hydrating cleanser that I use every morning when I wake up, but had a different scent. It has a similar price point so I doubt I’d be convinced to switch.

And the final item for this group of empties is Clinique’s moisture surge moisturizer which I quite like. I used this at night daily until it was used up and as with many of clinique’s other moisturizers, quite loved it.

Truth is, if I’d postponed this empties post by abut 4 days I’d probably have another 4 items to add. I am that close on a number of products! But at the same time, I knew that if I didn’t get this posted it would probably be next month before I got an empties post up. So, I’ll be eager to share my empties again next month!

August Beauty Balance

In early July I placed an order with Yes Style, it was my first order from this company that I’d heard so much about over the past few years. I had been wanting to try it for most of those years but also wanted to use a bunch of items I had in my collection, keep my eyes and ears open for the items I might best enjoy, and also order enough to make it “worth it” since the products must come from so far away.

I really didn’t expect my order to arrive so quickly, but by mid-July it was already at my house. Since I’d already done July beauty balance posts, I figured I’d just wait for August.

For starters, last month the total leaving my collection over what entered this year was 43 items. And here’s what entered “this” month.

9 items total. Here’s a rundown.

You don’t have to be following along with online beauty long before you realize that the Missha BB cream has a cult following. With its nice spf and great reviews, I thought I’d give it a try. While I’ve used it once, the color is more of a winter color so I have set it aside for now.

I also have heard great things about the Biore facial sunscreen. As someone who really hasn’t found her perfect sunscreen routine for mornings, I figured I’d give it a try.

Then I also go the CosRX snail mucin power essence. I have been using something from The Ordinary to keep the redness in my face under control, but I wanted to give this one a try. This is basically a replacement item as I am quite close to being done with what I have from The Ordinary.

Pyunkang Yul essence toner is something I tried in a sample size and really loved. That was about 2 years ago so it’s been sitting in my loves list since and I was quite happy to give it a try in this order.

I’ve also been eager to try a cleansing oil since I really enjoy cleansing balms. Technically I’ve got an overabundance of cleansing balms and really didn’t need this right now, but turns out I really enjoy it, have been using it regularly, and may very well repurchase in a future order. It’s Purito’s from green cleansing balm.

I liked the color tones of this romand better than shape bronzer/contour product. I haven’t really used it yet since I am working on a bronzer in my project pan but I look forward to doing so. Maybe I’ll experiment with it this week!

A’Pieu’s juicy pang blushers caught my interest. I tried these once but since it’s summer, I am leaving this to explore more thoroughly in the winter. I need the powder products in the summer!

And finally, the Peripera inklasting cover foundation seemed quite interesting and gets great reviews. Again I’ve purchased in a winter color, so I will be waiting on this item. I keep saying winter color, but really that’s most of fall, winter, and all of spring. I really only darken down for a short time in the summer so I tend to not purchase foundation colors in summer tones, using instead ones I already have to deepen down the winter colors.

And finally, not from the yes style order, is a simple container of wet n wild powder. I needed another powder to finish out my summer and I decided that this one is inexpensive and utilitarian and I’d just pick it up and call it good.

So, that’s 9 incoming items, leaving me at the total out over what came in this month at 34. And, since I’ve chatted so long about my purchases, I think I’ll save my empties for tomorrow.

Eyeshadow Roulette Project Update

Generally I attempt to get my eyeshadow roulette project post up on the 5th of the month. I did not do so this month, but I did take a snapshot of my notebook where I record usage to make sure at least that was accurate.

Here’s the color scheme I began with last month.

I’d had high hopes for this color palette, the blue in particular. Sadly, it did not perform well at all on my eyelids. When used as a shimmer all over the lid, it creased terribly and wore off. Also, the top matte shade developed pan about two days after this photo was taken, so I didn’t keep using it much after. Here’s the photo of the pans of each of these colors:

Urban Decay Big Sky (the blue) has a nice dip in it despite the fact that it won’t be used as a lid color. I am using it as an eyeliner when I can, and I now have 22 uses.

Too Faced Sweet Peach Georgia has a bit of a dip in it, and I was able to do a full 30 uses and rotate it out.

Revlon Maverick palette I hit pan 2 days after posting, so that got rotated out.

Colourpop Bye Bye Birdie palette I had both Heron Chic and Nevermore to work on. I managed to get my 30 uses on both and that palette is rotated out.

My Too Faced christmas palette color Make a Wish is starting to see a dip. I currently have 25 uses on this one so I will be able to finish in the upcoming month.

I did not achieve any “bonus” pans either this month, which is fine!

So, I pulled in new colors to keep with my 6 colors. And in the end, I pulled 3 nyx colors. One of which is in a palette I already had in this challenge. It’s the NYX happy birthday palette and I’d achieved 2 bonus pans during the time it was in the challenge previously. I love that I’ll keep working on the palette and get more use out of it.

Here’s the swatch photo:

The only matte here is the green at the bottom. That’s Violet Voss Sugar Crystals Palette (another I’ve already explored in this challenge!) color Mint Choco.

In any case, let’s ATTEMPT to be more organized. From top to bottom, the first two are the two still in from last month. Urban Decay Born To Run palette color Big Sky and the Too Faced christmas palette color Make a Wish.

Below those two is a Nyx copper shimmer color from an advent calendar. It’s a single. And then a nyx shimmer that is pink, it’s from the same advent calendar and is also a single.

And below that is another coppery nyx color from the happy birthday palette.

Ultimately while I’ll need to draw in mattes from elsewhere, this looks like a fairly cohesive color story and I will not have too much trouble working on it this month. I worry about the mint green but I’ll experiment with an “ice cream eye” look using the nyx singles as well.

Here’s what the pans are looking like:

These are just the rolled in colors as I took photos above of the other two palettes.

In the past I’d gone from trying to create pan in each color to just trying to get 30 uses or pan, whichever came first. Depending on where I am next month, I may try to give myself a new rule or two. The first may be that if I roll in a new palette, the next color I choose is also from that palette. Trying to juggle multiple palettes in the morning can be a bit daunting. Since I chose two singles this month I didn’t implement this rule yet. I may also keep rolling until I get a palette I haven’t used yet, as my usage on just two palettes is pretty heavy now, with little use on the other items in my collection. But at the moment, these are just ideas I am throwing around in my head, I am not implementing them yet!

Partners in Cream Project Pan Update 7

This is the official date that I am supposed to post this update, so I’ve managed to get this one post up in time even though I’ve been a little lax about posting lately.

Just a recap, Partners in Cream project pan attempts to use up cream products in our collections since they go off faster than power products. Truthfully, I think this would be best suited for cream makeup products, but that’s not really going to work for my climate and skin during the summer. I’ll ease back into panning cream makeup products when the weather cools.

Here’s where I was last month:

I’d finished the two little perfume samples and the Becca primer. I’d added in the born this way foundation on the right hand side.

Here’s this month’s update:

With my It cosmetics cc cream (the matte version) you can see that I have worked through everything I can that will come out of the pump. This morning I cut this open and I am sure I’ll be done by the end of the week, so I am adding another item.

More progress on my facial spray. It’s very consistent use right now, I seem to use up about the same every time.

I have made no progress on the Born This Way foundation, I used it once or twice last month. I will concentrate on this with the cc cream being done.

No Poreblem primer, I’ve had another month of consistent use on it as well. I have been concentrating on this solely now that the Becca one is gone. At the beginning of this process I would not have said that I particularly like this primer but honestly it’s really grown on me. It’s good, I am enjoying using it.

My Clarins sunscreen has seen a bit of use but not a ton. I think I can do better this month! So that’s my goal. Increase the use on this product.

And, I’ve added a small rollerball perfume sample, it’s Tocca Maya. I like this one a lot and it is a reasonably summery fragrance. I’d like to finish this up! It’s completely full currently.

It’s always lovely to finish a product (even though I am not technically finished, close enough to call it done) when working through a number of longer term products. I maintain that the matte cc cream has served me very well this year, stuck nicely to my nose for the majority of the day with minimal touching up despite heavy mask use. I hope that there’s a time where mask use won’t factor into my makeup decisions anymore, but now is not that time!

Delays

I took a much needed 2 weeks off. Most of that time was spent at home, obviously, with Miss Butterfly. Mr. Ink also took time off to be at home for part of my two weeks. I had projects around the house I felt I wanted to get done, but in the end, I didn’t do many of them.

The reality is that I really needed that reset of my brain and my work attitude. And it worked! I am no longer stuck in the loop of checking my email while I am at home and worrying a lot about work items that aren’t mine to worry about on off hours.

I have a few blog posts planned, and I had this finished object to photograph, but just couldn’t be bothered to get to it. I finished this likely about a month ago actually.

It’s really lovely! It’s a combo of handspun that I made, the grey tones, and handspun that Miss Marja made, the colored yarn. I believe the two yarns really look perfect together, and I am glad I made the choice.

Today was supposed to be a post of my pan those eyeshadows roulette update, but I just didn’t get photos in a timely manner. Returning to work this week has been exhausting. Hopefully I can get that post up soon though as I am still going strong on my project and still enjoying it quite a bit.

That’s the quick update from me today, hope everyone is having a decent week.

Protect Your Meatsuit Project Pan Update 7

And on with the second project pan update that falls on the first of the month. This one is all skincare/haircare/bodycare items. Last month I was unable to roll anything new in, and it felt like it had been a very long time since I’d rolled in anything new. Here’s where I was:

img_4112

I am very pleased to report that I’ve finished both the ouai leave in conditioner and the Elemis Papaya enzyme peel face mask. So, I get to roll in two new products this month. Here’s my photo for this month:

img_4665

I didn’t get a whole heck of a lot finished of the shower gel but I love it so much, and it feels like I am ok with slowing down on this one, savoring the last bit.

The other elemis face mask is the one I will concentrate on now that the enzyme peel is finished. I did not get much at all worked through on it.

My exfolikate cleanser is now the only one I am using, so I think I’ll make great progress on this one before next month. Who knows, might even be finished!

Then there’s two products to roll in. First is my living proof styling cream. I got this in a subscription box some time ago now, and it’s not really the type of thing I use in my daily routine. Progress on this may be slow. I have already been using it here and there. I could not mark the bottle, but I weighed it, it currently weighs 99 grams.

Then there’s my Thayers witch hazel toner. This is not something I’ll purchase again, and it’s been languishing in my stash for too long now. I would like to work through it for the remainder of this summer so that I can move on and not have it cluttering up my bathroom closet. The paper label is great for marking progress though!

This month is a month that proves again that if I just keep concentrating on the same items repeatedly they do get used up in due time. So, now I’ll just hope I can finish up another product or two in the next month.

Rolling Project Pan Update 7

We are now through 7 months of my rolling project pan and I am still enjoying it quite a bit. I still love that I am concentrating on just 6 makeup items at once and allowing myself to explore other parts of my collection in the mornings. I may do another full face project someday, but this year it’s been nice to roll through 6 at a time. 6ish I suppose, since I sometimes add makeup items to my partners in cream project pan.

The list as of last month:

1.  A product with cute packaging
2.  An expensive product
3.  A product in loose form
4.  A drugstore product
5.  A product I bought because of youtube
6.  An old favorite
7.  A product you haven’t used in a while.
8. A product of your choosing
9. A product from a previous project.
10. A Unique product

And the photo of where I was last month:

img_4101

I had added the little pan of frankenhighlight after finishing up some setting powder. Other than that, nothing new rolled in or out. Here’s my photo for today:

img_4657

Sorry about the weird shadow!

I met my goal on my expensive product! My hourglass dim light powder finally has pan. It’s a waffle pan, and I am thrilled to have gotten there.

My drugstore product is my nyx eyebrow pencil. I have used it a bit but not a ton. I hope to make better progress in this upcoming month.

An old favorite-this is my benefit hula bronzer sample. I’ve expanded the pan a tiny bit, but I’ve actually been concentrating on wearing down the pan in the area it is the thickest rather than expanding the pan. The expanded pan was just a bonus.

A product I haven’t used in a while is my blue L’oreal liner, and my goal was to use it past the L’Oreal branding. While it’s hard to see in the photo, I can still see the long part of the “L” so this stays in my project for another month. I am positive I’ll be done after that.

A product of my choosing is my it cosmetics cc cream, and I did mark this one with a pink line. I think I will have this done by next month, I’ve been hitting it pretty hard. But I do also have 3 foundations in my project right now. I will concentrate on one other, then I will concentrate on this one.

And my unique product is my frankenhighlight from my very first ever depotting experience and my first ever experience trying to combine things I didn’t like to get something I did like. The pan is massively expanded. I’ve used it as a highlighter but mostly I use it as an inner corner highlight when putting on eyeshadow. I am hoping to finish this up by next month as well. But I am not certain I can do so at the rate I am using it currently.

So, that leaves one item I can roll in under a new prompt. The prompt is “A product you don’t like” and it was a very easy choice. I like the vast majority of my makeup collection right now! But I did purchase this white colourpop eyeliner that I just hate. Most of it has broken off in use and kind of flown across the room at different times during use. One piece landed in my coffee once, and I didn’t find it until I finished my coffee. The remaining piece I can’t even show you as it has broken off at the base so I have to be careful in using it, and careful not to drop it. There’s a limit to how much longer it will last, and hopefully, that limit will be about a month. We will see how it goes.

In any case, it’s been a pretty good month for panning and I am looking forward to being able to roll out a few more items next month. Maybe!
